I admit that many of these verses are from the Old Testament which some argue is not a reflection of Christianity. I also admit that many do not state that they condone a certain behaviour they just tell a story, however bizarre it might be. Some however state how one should behave, especially the ones that state stone your wife if you find out she is not a virgin (seems a little harsh in today’s context). Not sure my wife would be alive right now.

Rest assured there are many more, I think that this is the most violent and hate filled book ever written. I always thought it would be funny to be asked to do the bible reading at a wedding and be able to choose my own verses.

I think you will find that we are both atheist when it comes to most Gods, I just believe in one fewer than you. When you can tell me why you disregard all other Gods you will understand why I disregard yours. I don’t take credit for that last sentence, I just like it.

Bye for now.

Genesis 19:4-8- "4 Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. 5 They called to Lot, 'Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.' 6 Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him 7 and said, 'No, my friends. Don't do this wicked thing. 8 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don't do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.'"

Genesis 38:8-10 - "8 Then Judah said to Onan, "Lie with your brother's wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to produce offspring for your brother." 9 But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother. 10 What he did was wicked in the LORD's sight; so he put him to death also."

Exodus 35:2 – "2 For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death."

Deuteronomy 21:18-21 – "18 If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, 19 his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. 20 They shall say to the elders, "This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard." 21 Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid."

Leviticus 20:13 – "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads."

Deuteronomy 25:11-12 – "11 If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, 12 you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity."

Deuteronomy 20:10-16 – "10 When you march up to attack a city, make its people an offer of peace. 11 If they accept and open their gates, all the people in it shall be subject to forced labor and shall work for you. 12 If they refuse to make peace and they engage you in battle, lay siege to that city. 13 When the LORD your God delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the men in it. 14 As for the women, the children, the livestock and everything else in the city, you may take these as plunder for yourselves. And you may use the plunder the LORD your God gives you from your enemies. 15 This is how you are to treat all the cities that are at a distance from you and do not belong to the nations nearby. 16 However, in the cities of the nations the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes."

Deuteronomy 22:13-21 – "13 If a man takes a wife and, after lying with her, dislikes her 14 and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, "I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity," 15 then the girl's father and mother shall bring proof that she was a virgin to the town elders at the gate. 16 The girl's father will say to the elders, "I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. 17 Now he has slandered her and said, 'I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.' But here is the proof of my daughter's virginity." Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, 18 and the elders shall take the man and punish him. 19 They shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver a and give them to the girl's father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives. 20 If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the girl's virginity can be found, 21 she shall be brought to the door of her father's house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done a disgraceful thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father's house. You must purge the evil from among you."

Isaiah 13:13-16 – "13 Therefore I will make the heavens tremble; and the earth will shake from its place at the wrath of the LORD Almighty, in the day of his burning anger. 14 Like a hunted gazelle, like sheep without a shepherd, each will return to his own people, each will flee to his native land. 15 Whoever is captured will be thrust through; all who are caught will fall by the sword. 16 Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be looted and their wives ravished."

Numbers 31:14-18 – "14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who returned from the battle. 15 "Have you allowed all the women to live?" he asked them. 16 "They were the ones who followed Balaam's advice and were the means of turning the Israelites away from the LORD in what happened at Peor, so that a plague struck the LORD's people. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man."

Leviticus 21:17-24 - 17 "Say to Aaron: 'For the generations to come none of your descendants who has a defect may come near to offer the food of his God. 18 No man who has any defect may come near: no man who is blind or lame, disfigured or deformed; 19 no man with a crippled foot or hand, 20 or who is hunchbacked or dwarfed, or who has any eye defect, or who has festering or running sores or damaged testicles. 21 No descendant of Aaron the priest who has any defect is to come near to present the offerings made to the LORD by fire. He has a defect; he must not come near to offer the food of his God. 22 He may eat the most holy food of his God, as well as the holy food; 23 yet because of his defect, he must not go near the curtain or approach the altar, and so desecrate my sanctuary. I am the LORD, who makes them holy.' " 24 So Moses told this to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites.

Deuteronomy 17:12 - "12 Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the Lord your God must die. In this way you will purge the evil from Israel."

2 Chronicles 15:12-13 - "12 They entered into a covenant to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul. 13 All who would not seek the LORD, the God of Israel, were to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman."

Exodus 12:28-30 - "28 The Israelites did just what the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron. 29 At midnight the LORD struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well. 30 Pharaoh and all his officials and all the Egyptians got up during the night, and there was loud wailing in Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead." Isaiah 13:15-18 - "15 Whoever is captured will be thrust through; all who are caught will fall by the sword. 16 Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be looted and their wives ravished. 17 See, I will stir up against them the Medes, who do not care for silver and have no delight in gold. 18 Their bows will strike down the young men; they will have no mercy on infants nor will they look with compassion on children."

Jemiah 49:20-21 - " 20 Therefore, hear what the LORD has planned against Edom, what he has purposed against those who live in Teman: The young of the flock will be dragged away; he will completely destroy their pasture because of them. 21 At the sound of their fall the earth will tremble; their cry will resound to the Red Sea."

Hosea 13:16 - "16 The people of Samaria must bear their guilt, because they have rebelled against their God. They will fall by the sword; their little ones will be dashed to the ground, their pregnant women ripped open."

Exodus 21:20-21 – "20 If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished, 21 but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since the slave is his property."

Colossians 3:22-24 – "22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. 23Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." Ephesians 6:5 - "5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ."

1 Peter 2:13 - "13 Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority."

1 Peter 2:18 - "18 Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh."

1 Timothy 6:1 - "1 All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God's name and our teaching may not be slandered."

Genesis 19:30-36 - "30 Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. 31 One day the older daughter said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is no man around here to lie with us, as is the custom all over the earth. 32 Let's get our father to drink wine and then lie with him and preserve our family line through our father." 33 That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and lay with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up. 34 The next day the older daughter said to the younger, "Last night I lay with my father. Let's get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and lie with him so we can preserve our family line through our father." 35 So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went and lay with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up. 36 So both of Lot's daughters became pregnant by their father."

Albert Einstein

I will be happy to forward those to you, later today I think. I just wanted to reply with an Einstein quote of my own. The one you supplied is the most used by people wanting to tout his religious beliefs.

It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it.” – Albert Einstein

I too look forward to this.

No offense taken at all ... you and Jesse are special to me ... and I have just heard recently that Jesse's Mom is working at UH now where I am working ... I'll keep my eyes open for her as I did meet her once, before you and Jesse were married ....

As far as the far right social conservatives, you will find I have little in common with them and ignorance is not agreeable to me at all. They are many people who use the name of God in every religion to fill their own bellies. No different than those in any religion who use the name of God to commit wrong and keep control and power. There are no serious Christians who listen to these people.

As far as science discovering that God is responsible for less and less you must know the scientific world is sharply divided on this issue ... there are many scientists who see God every where in science... Einstein being one of them ... he said, "God does not play dice." ..... "Physics for Poets" by Robert H March.

You've shared a lot here and I appreciate your views ... looking forward to a peaceful and intelligent parlez.... I guess I'd like to start here...

4. and most importantly the Holy Bible ( you may claim you have read this, if so I will forward you some verses you may have missed )

Forward away ..... :-)

Hugs to Jess ....ran into Sue Miller at UH ... when she saw me she got all excited and spilled her coffe all over the floor and herself ... LOL

Initiating a Debate

Wendy,

Do not take offence at this email, I have been reading for several years now your attempts at “spreading the good word” over the internet, but when the article puts down one religion in favour of another I felt it was time to say something.

I am afraid I cannot agree with you assertion that this is good news. Abandoning one 2000 year old superstition in favour of another does nothing to advance humanity, science or common sense. It is also somewhat conceited to view your God as the one true God based on a violent and ancient book. Maybe the Muslims are right, I am quite sure they are not. Just as much as I am sure you are not.

A quick visit to the Joel Rosenberg home page at http://joelrosenberg.com/ with promotions for his new book The Last Days, and links to Rush Limbaugh’s home page it was quite apparent that this person could easily be considered among the far right social conservatives that find themselves in positions of power and influence in the United States today. I find these people offensive with their intolerance to lifestyles and religions that do not reflect their own; their attempts to withhold science education from their children and others and their blind faith in what can only be described as ancient stories while disregarding scientifically tested fact based explanations for the world around them. As we discover more and more, God is responsible for less and less.

I will end by recommending 4 books:

1. The God Delusion, by Prof. Richard Dawkins

2. The End of Faith, by Sam Harris

3. The Demon Haunted World, by Dr Carl Sagan

4. and most importantly the Holy Bible ( you may claim you have read this, if so I will forward you some verses you may have missed)
